The likelihood of winning a Georgia criminal appeal is low but not impossible. Importantly, a person who has been convicted can greatly increase his or her odds of winning an appeal by hiring an experienced Atlanta criminal appellate lawyer to handle the appeal.

A recent study by the Court Statistics Project (CSP) from 2021 showed that there's about a 10% chance of winning a reversal in a Georgia criminal case. The study, however, has some limitations, which are discussed in the video on this page. Perhaps, most importantly, the study does not account for the experience of the lawyer handling the appeal nor the quality of the appeal itself. Our firm boasts a significantly higher rate than the average rate tallied by CSP.
Moreover, between 2017 and 2020, the Georgia Supreme Court granted petitions for certiorari (which means that the Court agreed to review the opinions of the Georgia Court of Appeals) in 174 cases. Of those cases, the Court reversed in 65 cases, which equates to a 37% reversal rate. In other words, appellants who can convince the Georgia Supreme Court to hear their case have a much better chance of succeeding on appeal.
